Vintage Jeep Tour Cambodia: What Should You Check Before Booking?
A vintage jeep tour in Cambodia is about adventure. Driving through the countryside in an open-top jeep, following red dirt roads between rice fields, passing small villages and exploring places far beyond the usual tourist routes. But before booking a vintage jeep tour in Cambodia, there is something most travellers probably never think about:
Is the jeep properly registered, documented and insured?
It may sound less exciting than choosing between Angkor Wat, Phnom Kulen or a countryside adventure, but when you are travelling in a vehicle that is more than 60 years old, it is an important question. We know because getting our vintage jeeps properly documented has been an adventure in itself.
Vintage Jeep Tours in Cambodia Since 2011
Cambodiajeep.com started organizing vintage jeep tours in Siem Reap in 2011. Our first tours took guests to the Angkor temples and through the countryside surrounding Siem Reap. Soon, we started exploring further.
In 2013, we introduced multi-day self-drive vintage jeep tours, allowing travellers to get behind the wheel themselves and experience Cambodia in a completely different way. Since then, our jeeps have travelled throughout the country. During those years, Cambodia has changed enormously. Roads that were once dirt tracks are now highways, remote areas have become much more accessible and regulations for vehicles have also developed. And that created an unusual problem for Cambodia’s vintage military jeeps.
How Do You Register a Jeep That Has Been in Cambodia for Decades?
Many of Cambodia’s old military jeeps have an unusual history. They arrived in the country decades ago during the war years. After the war, many were abandoned, dismantled or stripped for parts. From the 1990s onwards, some were restored and brought back to life. But there was no straightforward registration process for these old vehicles.
When we started operating tours, our jeeps did not have standard Cambodian licence plates. As a professional tour operator carrying international guests, we wanted our vehicles to be properly insured. The insurance company asked us for the vehicle registration documents. We didn’t have them.
So we went to the Ministry of Transport. That was the beginning of a very long journey.
Our First Licence Plates
Nobody seemed to know exactly how to register these old military vehicles. We went from department to department, trying to find a solution. After several months, we finally received the news we had been waiting for: our jeeps could be registered. We received yellow licence plates and happily returned to the insurance company.
Problem solved?
Not quite.
We were told that this type of registration was normally associated with agricultural vehicles and restricted in how it could be used. That wasn’t going to work for us. Our vintage jeep tours travelled beyond Siem Reap and eventually throughout Cambodia. So we went back to the authorities. After many discussions, a solution was eventually found that allowed us to operate our jeeps around Cambodia, and our insurance company accepted the documentation.
Finally, our jeeps could be insured. For years, everything worked well. Then came 2020.
Cambodia’s Vehicle Registration Rules Changed
Around 2019–2020, Cambodia tightened and standardized its vehicle registration and licence-plate system. We wanted to replace our old yellow licence plates with the new standardized plates. We assumed it would simply be a matter of exchanging one registration for another.
It wasn’t.
We were asked to provide import documentation for every jeep. There was one obvious problem:
Our jeeps had already been in Cambodia for decades.
They hadn’t recently arrived in a shipping container through a modern commercial importer. Their history went back to the war years. We therefore didn’t have conventional import documents. Without the required documentation, however, we couldn’t complete the new registration process. So we asked where we could obtain it.
The answer was Customs.
The Price: Around $2,500 Per Jeep
We contacted Customs and were told that the necessary documentation could be arranged. The cost was approximately US$2,500 per jeep. At the time, we had 14 vintage jeeps. Even worse, this was during COVID. Cambodia’s borders were effectively closed to international tourism. There were virtually no guests, no jeep tours and no way of knowing exactly when tourism would return.
Spending tens of thousands of dollars on paperwork for vehicles that weren’t even carrying tourists was not exactly what we had planned. We tried to find another solution. For months, we made phone calls and spoke with different authorities. We even contacted other vintage jeep owners in Siem Reap to see whether we could arrange the documentation together and reduce the cost.
Eventually, after about six months, we approached Customs in Battambang. There, we found a way forward at approximately US$1,500 per jeep, plus some additional administrative expenses. Still a lot of money. But we decided to do it.
Why We Made the Investment During COVID
At that moment, we had no idea exactly when Cambodia would reopen. But we knew one thing:
When tourists returned, our jeeps needed to be ready.
We wanted the correct documentation. We wanted proper licence plates. And we wanted our vehicles to be properly insured before carrying guests again. So, despite COVID, we went ahead with the process.
Today, the vintage jeeps operated by Cambodiajeep.com have the required documentation and Cambodian registration, allowing us to arrange the appropriate insurance for our operation.
It was expensive. It was frustrating. And it took months.
But for us, it was part of operating a professional vintage jeep tour company.
Why Are Some Vintage Jeep Tours in Cambodia Cheaper Than Others?
This is where our story becomes relevant to anyone considering booking a vintage jeep tour in Cambodia. When comparing jeep tours, it is easy to compare only the price.
One tour costs $X. Another costs $Y.
The jeeps may even look almost identical in the photos. But what is behind that price?
Operating a vintage vehicle professionally involves much more than buying an old jeep and putting tourists inside it. There are registration costs, documentation, insurance, road taxes, maintenance, spare parts and repairs. And with vehicles of this age, maintenance is particularly important.
This doesn’t mean that the most expensive jeep tour is automatically the best, nor does it mean that a cheaper operator is necessarily doing something wrong.
It simply means you should ask questions.
Three Questions to Ask Before Booking a Cambodia Jeep Tour
Before booking a vintage jeep tour in Siem Reap or elsewhere in Cambodia, we recommend asking your operator three simple questions:
- Is the jeep officially registered in Cambodia?
- Does the vehicle have the required documentation and technical inspection?
- Is the vehicle properly insured for the tour being offered?
A professional operator should be comfortable answering these questions.
This becomes even more important if you are booking a self-drive jeep tour in Cambodia, where you will be driving the vehicle yourself.
Adventure Should Still Be Adventure
We don’t tell this story because we want to turn a vintage jeep experience into a discussion about paperwork. Quite the opposite.
When you get behind the wheel of one of our jeeps, we want you to forget about paperwork completely. You should be watching the road ahead.and should be feeling the wind. You should be waving to children in the villages, stopping somewhere you never expected to stop and discovering a side of Cambodia that you might never see from inside a normal air-conditioned tour vehicle.
That’s what a vintage jeep tour should be about.
But behind every great adventure should be a company that has taken care of the less exciting details. Registration. Documentation. Maintenance. Insurance.
You enjoy Cambodia.
We take care of the jeep.
