Cambodia Overland – When Adventure Meets Friendship

Cambodia Overland – When Adventure Meets Friendship

12 Adventurers. 8 Days. Vintage Jeeps. One Unforgettable Journey.

Some journeys are measured in kilometres. Others are measured in memories, muddy boots, shared laughter, and friendships that last long after the engines have stopped.

On October 17, 2026, twelve adventurous travellers — ten from India and two from England — set off from Phnom Penh on an extraordinary eight-day self-drive expedition through Cambodia. Organized in partnership with Adventures Overland India and Cambodiajeep.com, this was no ordinary road trip. Behind the wheel of our vintage military jeeps, the group would travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, crossing the beautiful landscapes of Kirirom, the remote Cardamom Mountains, Thma Bang, Veal Veng, and Battambang. And as every experienced overlander knows, the best adventures rarely go exactly according to plan.

The Adventure Begins

Leading the Indian delegation were Prachur and Vedansh from Adventures Overland, while the Cambodian team, headed by André and Lily, took care of the route, logistics, vehicles, and local support. Together, the two teams shared one mission: to give the participants an authentic overland adventure through a side of Cambodia that few visitors ever experience.

Leaving Phnom Penh behind, the convoy headed towards Kirirom, where the busy streets of the capital gradually gave way to countryside, forests, and mountain landscapes. But this was only the beginning. Ahead lay some of Cambodia’s most spectacular driving routes, with the Cardamom Mountains promising both breathtaking scenery and plenty of challenges.

Mud, Water and the Unexpected

There is something special about driving a vintage jeep. No luxury dashboard, no modern driving assistance, and certainly no guarantee that the road ahead will be smooth. Just you, the steering wheel, the engine, and the landscape unfolding around you. And Cambodia had a few surprises waiting.

Muddy tracks, flooded fields, slippery slopes, deep water crossings, and even broken wooden bridges turned ordinary driving days into real adventures. Some sections required careful inspection before the jeeps could continue. Others demanded teamwork, patience, and a little creative thinking. This is where the experience of the Cambodian support team made all the difference. Whether checking the depth of a water crossing, finding a safe route around an obstacle, or guiding a jeep through a difficult section, the team was always ready to step in. And rather than becoming frustrated by the challenges, the participants embraced them. After all, isn’t that what overlanding is all about?

Beyond the Roads

Of course, the journey was about much more than driving. Travelling through rural Cambodia meant passing small villages, rice fields, local communities, and landscapes that rarely feature in conventional travel itineraries. From the forests around Thma Bang and the mountains near Veal Veng to the countryside of Battambang, each day revealed another side of the country. There were moments of excitement, moments of uncertainty, and plenty of laughter along the way.

But perhaps the most memorable part was how quickly a group of travellers from different backgrounds became one team. Helping each other through difficult sections, celebrating successful crossings, and sharing stories at the end of each day created a bond that no ordinary sightseeing tour could ever reproduce.

Lily – The Superwoman of the Expedition

Every successful expedition has people working tirelessly behind the scenes. And on this journey, Lily made an unforgettable impression. Managing the convoy, coordinating the team, looking after the guests, and ensuring that everyone was well fed, she seemed to have endless energy. But what touched the participants most was not simply her organizational ability. It was her kindness.

Whenever food was left over, Lily made sure it was shared with villagers and children in the communities the convoy passed through. A simple gesture, perhaps, but one that left a lasting impression.

For one participant, Mr. Vasan, Lily became known as “Our Superwoman, Our Annapoorani” — a reference to the Hindu goddess associated with nourishment. A beautiful compliment, and one that captures the spirit of hospitality we always hope our guests will experience in Cambodia.

In the Words of Mr. Vasan

Following the expedition, Mr. Vasan shared a heartfelt message with both teams. His words capture the adventure better than we ever could.

“What an incredible journey it has been — from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, through Sludgy, sloply, muddy roads, flooded fields, broken wooden bridges, paddy villages and ancient temples — every kilometre was filled with adventure and warmth. Was truly a mud boggling experience!!!”

He also had some wonderful words for the Cambodian crew:

“You were the ones who led the entire route and drive. What stood out was the energy of your boys — it never faded, from morning till night, from Day 1 to Day 7!”

And for Lily:

“What a powerful combination of Strength, Bravery and Kindness you are! Watching you manage an entire convoy, take charge in the toughest situations, and still find time to care for everyone — you are simply unstoppable!”

Perhaps his most touching observation was about the friendships formed along the way:

“A trip is only as good as the people you travel with. And we had the BEST group!”

His message ended with words that meant a great deal to everyone involved:

“Reached home with a heart full of gratitude and memories that will stay forever.”

— Mr. Vasan, Expedition Participant, October 2026

Two Teams, One Shared Passion

A successful overland expedition requires more than good vehicles and an exciting route. It requires trust, teamwork, experience, and people who genuinely care about the journey. Working alongside Prachur and Vedansh from Adventures Overland was a pleasure for the entire Cambodian team. Their coordination, positive attitude, and close connection with the participants helped create a wonderful atmosphere throughout the expedition. Together, Adventures Overland and Cambodiajeep.com demonstrated what can happen when two teams from different countries share the same passion for adventure travel.

The Journey Ends, but the Memories Remain

After eight days on the road, the convoy finally reached Siem Reap. Behind them were the muddy tracks of the Cardamom Mountains, the landscapes of Battambang, countless challenging crossings, and hundreds of kilometres behind the wheel of their vintage jeeps. But the real reward was something that could never be measured on a map. New friendships. Shared experiences. And memories that will continue to bring smiles long after everyone has returned home.
